How Age Eligibility & Cut-Off Dates Are Determined for Central & State Government Examinations

The Department of Personnel & Training (DoPT) Crucial Date Rule
As per DoPT Office Memorandum No. 14017/70/87-Estt.(RR), the crucial date for determining age limits for competitive examinations is standardized as follows:
- Examinations held in the 1st Half of the Year (Jan–June): Crucial Cut-Off Date is 1st January.

"In calculation of a person's age, the day of his birth must be counted as a whole day and he attains the specified age on the day preceding the anniversary of his birthday."
For instance, if a recruitment notification sets the maximum age ceiling at 30 years as of 1st August 2026:
- A candidate born on 2nd August 1996 completes 30 years on 1st August 2026 and is legally ELIGIBLE.
- A candidate born on 1st August 1996 completed 30 years on 31st July 2026, meaning on 1st August 2026 they have entered their 31st year and are legally OVER-AGED (unless covered under category relaxation).
